Why Is Atlantic City Losing Its Appeal?

Benjamin WhiteBy Benjamin WhiteSeptember 11, 2021

Atlantic City’s gradual decline and its current state of disrepair is a complex combination of some key factors. These factors have changed its economy and developmental course over time. Let’s explore these elements that have collectively contributed to the city’s present condition.

    1. Economic shifts: Once a thriving resort and a favored tourist destination during the mid-20th century, Atlantic City’s glory was closely linked with its vibrant boardwalk, casinos, and entertainment industry. However, the tide turned as the gambling landscape across the country evolved.

The rise of competing gambling hubs like Las Vegas and the subsequent establishment of regional casinos created heightened competition. This shift impacted Atlantic City’s standing within the gambling industry, ultimately affecting its economic stability and prominence.

The launch of online casinos also affected the city economically. New Jersey online casinos have become popular in the state, while customers from other locations no longer need to travel to Atlantic City to place bets

    2. Failure of other industries: Atlantic City’s heavy reliance on its tourism and entertainment sectors, particularly the casino industry, was a big blow. The decline of this industry, combined with the closure of significant casino establishments was a major setback to the city’s employment opportunities. It was also a factor that led to a decline in revenue streams.

The effect of these closures was the loss of jobs and a decrease in economic activity. This meant a bigger impact on the city’s economic challenges.

    3. Infrastructure neglect: Over time, Atlantic City found itself struggling with a set of urban decay issues and neglected infrastructure.

Escalating crime rates, a prevalence of poverty, and insufficient investments in public infrastructure have collectively spoiled the city’s appeal. These challenges hindered the city’s ability to attract tourists and businesses. These also led to a deterioration in its overall aesthetics and quality of life.

    4. Limited economic diversification: One of Atlantic City’s vulnerabilities lies in its heavy reliance on the casino industry. This singular focus made the city susceptible to economic downturns and shifts in consumer preferences. Struggling to diversify its economic base, Atlantic City faced bad times in attracting other industries. Alternative industries could have potentially offered employment alternatives and boosted sustainable economic growth

    5. Corrupt governance: The corrupt Atlantic City government has played an undeniable role in the city’s downfall. Mishandling of casino tax revenue and a history of corrupt practices have hindered the city’s potential for progress. These issues have blocked the effective utilization of resources. This has also led to mistrust among both citizens and potential investors.

    6. Transportation industry expansion: The expansion of the transportation industry further led to Atlantic City’s decline. The growth of the interstate highway system made travel to other destinations more accessible and cost-effective.

Simultaneously, the surge in air travel encouraged tourists to explore newer and more exotic locations worldwide. As a result, the attraction of Atlantic City as a vacation destination declined. It has meant a big setback for tourism, job losses, and abandonment of properties.

    7. Neighboring rivals: The ascendancy of neighboring cities like New York and Philadelphia held a significant stake in Atlantic City’s diminishing story. These metropolitan counterparts not only invested substantially in their own tourism industries but also adopted legalized gambling.

This shift diminished Atlantic City’s gambling monopoly and subsequently its charm. The city witnessed a sharp downturn in both tourism and revenue, leading to more economic downturns.

    8. Negative image: Perhaps one of the most challenging aspects to overcome, Atlantic City’s reputation became synonymous with decay, crime, and poverty. This negative image discouraged potential visitors and prospective investors alike. The prevalent image of an unsafe and undesirable locale made the decline even worse.
