How To Test Electrolytic Capacitor With Digital Multimeter

Benjamin WhiteBy Benjamin WhiteJune 30, 2023

Electrolytic capacitors are widely used in electrical and electronics circuits and devices. Testing the capacitance of electrolytic capacitors is important to ensure that they are working properly. This article explains how to test an electrolytic capacitor using a digital multimeter.

    Preparing to Test

To test an electrolytic capacitor, you will need a digital multimeter and a few other items. The digital multimeter should have a capacitance testing feature. You will also need an insulated wire, a pair of needle-nose pliers, and a pair of safety glasses.

The first step is to turn off the power to the circuit in which the electrolytic capacitor is located. This is important for safety reasons as capacitors can store electricity which can cause an electric shock if you are not careful.

Once the power is off, you can use the needle-nose pliers to disconnect the capacitor from the circuit. Make sure that you are wearing your safety glasses for this step.

    Testing an Electrolytic Capacitor

Once the capacitor is disconnected from the circuit, you can begin testing it. The first step is to set the digital multimeter to the capacitance testing mode. Then, you will need to connect the insulated wire to the leads of the capacitor. This will enable the multimeter to measure the capacitance of the capacitor.

Once the wire is connected, you can turn on the multimeter and take a reading. The reading will tell you the capacitance of the capacitor. It is important to note that the reading may not be exact, as capacitors can lose their capacitance over time.

Once you have taken the reading, you can compare it to the expected capacitance of the capacitor. If the reading is significantly lower than the expected value, then the capacitor may be defective and should be replaced.

In summary, testing an electrolytic capacitor with a digital multimeter is a relatively simple process. However, it is important to take safety precautions when disconnecting the capacitor from the circuit. Once the capacitor is disconnected, the multimeter can be used to measure the capacitance of the capacitor and determine if it is functioning properly.
