How to Recover Data from Hard Drive Not Showing Up in Windows

Benjamin WhiteBy Benjamin WhiteJuly 23, 2023

Your operating system might not be able to detect, identify, or list the hard drive as a storage device if your hard disc is not showing up in Windows. Faulty connections, driver issues, partition or file system problems, or hardware failures are just a few causes for this. Although trying to recover data from a hard drive not showing up in Windows can be annoying, there are several approaches you can use, including employing the best hard drive data recovery service. You can learn how to retrieve data from a hard disk that isn’t showing by your computer or operating system in this article.

    1. Verify the Disc Management:

    • To launch the Disc Management utility, right-click the “Start” icon and choose “Disc Management”.
    • Check the list of discs for the lost hard drive. The drive might need to be initialized and given a drive letter if it shows up as unallocated or with a black bar.

    2. Cable Connections of your Computer:

You should check all connections of your operating system to make sure all cables connecting your computer to the hard disk are firmly plugged in. And if it is not connected properly then connect it properly. You might want to try a different connection or port on your computer when attaching the hard disk. If your hard disk is external, try plugging it into another computer to see if it will show up or not on your computer.

    3. Initialise and Assign Disc Letter:

    • Right-click the disc if it appears to be unallocated and choose “Initialise Disc.”
    • Then select the proper disc initialization type (MBR or GPT) and adhere to the instructions displayed on the screen.
    • After initialization, right-click the free space and choose “New Simple Volume.”
    • Assign the volume a drive letter, then format the disc by following the on-screen instructions (caution: formatting will delete all data).

    4. Utilise software for data recovery:

Use data recovery software if the drive still isn’t visible or if it shows up as RAW or inaccessible.

    • Download and install a reliable data recovery program, such as Stellar Data Recovery Software.
    • Start the software, then choose the lost hard drive as the recovery process’s destination.
    • Use the software’s deep scan or partition recovery option to scan the drive.
    • After the scan, preview the data that can be recovered and choose the ones you want to keep.

In order to prevent overwriting any data on the damaged hard disk, choose a separate location to save the recovered information. If the hard disk is still not showing up in Windows, then try connecting it to a new computer or using a different operating system.

    5. Try Another Operating System or Computer.

    • Using a Linux-based operating system like Parted Magic or Ubuntu, make a bootable USB or DVD.
    • Choose the “Try Ubuntu” or comparable option when starting the computer from the USB or DVD to run the operating system without installing it.
    • Verify that the Linux environment recognizes the hard drive. If so, you can access it and copy your data to a different storage space.

    6. Professional Data Recovery Services:

If nothing works and your data is of utmost important for you then you should look for professional data recovery services such as Stellar Data Recovery Services. They are present worldwide and provide data recovery services in Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, Vashi, Pune, Coimbatore, Chennai, Chandigarh, Gurgaon, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Noida, Bangalore, and Kochi. These services are equipped with the specialized tools as well as specialized technicians necessary to handle physically harmed HDDs and complicated data loss scenarios.

Sometimes data recovery is not always possible, particularly if the hard drive has some specific physical damage. So regularly backing up your sensitive data is crucial to preventing data loss. If the data is priceless, you should also think about hiring a professional for their help.
