    Filming Locations for “Lonesome Dove”

    The majority of the filming for Lonesome Dove was done in and around the town of Las Vegas, New Mexico. This includes the iconic opening scene of the series, which was filmed at the historic Plaza Hotel in downtown Las Vegas. Other locations used for filming include the nearby towns of Santa Fe and Taos, as well as the Rio Grande Gorge in northern New Mexico.

    Much of the series was also filmed in Alberta, Canada. The sweeping landscapes of the province provided the perfect backdrop for the epic cattle drive, with scenes being filmed in and around the towns of Longview, High River, and Fort Macleod.

    The series was directed by Simon Wincer, with a screenplay by William D. Wittliff. The production was overseen by executive producer Suzanne de Passe, and the music was composed by Basil Poledouris.
