Can I Drive Through Illinois Tolls And Pay Later

Benjamin WhiteBy Benjamin WhiteJune 30, 2023

Driving through tolls in the state of Illinois can be a stressful experience, especially if you don’t have enough money to pay for them all at once. Fortunately, the state offers a way for drivers to pay for their tolls at a later date so they can continue their journey without worrying about the cost. In this article, we’ll explore the options available for drivers to pay for their tolls in Illinois.

    Paying for Illinois Tolls

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) offers drivers a few options for paying for tolls in the state. The most common way to pay for tolls is to use the I-PASS, a prepaid account that provides drivers with discounted toll rates and eliminates the need to stop at toll plazas. The I-PASS account can be used on all Illinois toll roads and bridges. Drivers can also use cash or credit/debit cards at toll plazas, although this method is more expensive than using an I-PASS.

    Postponing Payment for Tolls

If a driver does not have enough money to pay for the tolls at the time of travel, they can opt to use the Pay By Plate system. This system allows drivers to postpone payment for up to 30 days by registering their license plate number with the Illinois Tollway. Once registered, drivers will receive an invoice for the tolls due within 30 days. Drivers can then pay online, by mail, or at an Illinois Tollway Customer Service Center.

Paying for tolls in Illinois can be a stressful experience, but the state offers drivers a few options to make it easier. Drivers can use the I-PASS prepaid account or pay by cash or credit/debit card at toll plazas. For those who do not have enough money to pay for the tolls at the time of travel, they can register their license plate number with the Illinois Tollway and pay for the tolls within 30 days.
