The South has an incredible amount of natural beauty, culture and history to explore. If you just have a single day to fill, however, you’ll need to prioritise. You can get through quite a lot of what’s on offer via train, but you can’t expect to see everything in a day.
So, which destinations are worth visiting? Let’s take a look at a few promising candidates.
Bath
There’s no city in the UK quite like Bath take the train to see what’s on offer. Thanks to a unique series of planning restrictions, all of the buildings here follow a few classic principles, which makes the city very easy on the eye.
You can spend a few hours wandering around the side streets, taking everything in. Or, you can throw yourself into the city’s Roman heritage. There are special festive events and exhibitions held throughout the year, but deserving of special attention are the Roman Baths after which the city takes its name.
Dover
Characterised by its famous chalk cliffs, Dover must rank among the most iconic sites anywhere in the country. If you see a strip of white on the horizon, then you know that you’re almost back in England.
As well as functioning as a transport hub, Dover also has a rich military history. There’s a sizeable castle here, which was thrown up shortly after the Norman conquest. The castle grounds cover eighty acres, and you’ll get amazing views from the Great Tower. There’s also a Dunkirk experience, offering a unique insight into a pivotal chapter of the Second World War.
Oxford
Best known for its world-renowned university, Oxford is a city that’s packed with incredible architecture – which is what inspired Matthew Arnold to label it the ‘City of Dreaming Spires’.
The city has hosted some of the most incredible literary minds ever produced by this country, including Caroll, Lewis and Tolkien. Take a punt down the river, and a stroll around the local galleries. You might also enjoy some of the nightlife, if time allows!
Cotswolds
This little corner of the English countryside is synonymous with quaintness. You can spend your time wandering across rolling fields and along canal paths. There are dozens of picturesque little villages to stop at – and these will form the backbone of your trip. Prioritise the villages that you really want to visit, and plan a road trip between them. Cirencester Park is definitely worth a visit.
A day out in the South of England is a sensory journey through history, picturesque landscapes, and coastal wonders. Whether you’re captivated by ancient monuments, quaint villages, or the soothing sound of waves crashing on the shore, the South of England offers a diverse and enriching experience for every traveler. So, pack your bags and embark on a memorable adventure in this charming corner of the United Kingdom.
