3 Indications Your Kid Needs A Pulpotomy

Benjamin WhiteBy Benjamin WhiteDecember 7, 2023

Many factors including poor oral hygiene and genetics can cause your kid’s teeth to get infected. Learning that your child’s teeth are infected can be scary. Your kid needs primary teeth for talking, biting, and chewing. If they are infected, your child won’t be able to perform these activities easily.

A Pulpotomy can get rid of an infection in your child’s teeth and restore their oral health. However, knowing if your child needs this procedure can be challenging. Thankfully, Scottsdale Pediatric Dentistry can diagnose this condition and administer proper treatment. But before visiting these professionals, here are 3 signs you can look out for:

    • Sensitivity To Heat And Cold

Children with a damaged pulp may experience a sharp pain when drinking a hot cup of cocoa, or hot soups, or when enjoying their favorite ice cream. They may wince, hold their gums, or show other gestures indicating they’re in pain. Although sensitivity may seem to be a momentary discomfort, and may go away if your child eats room-temperature food, it could be a sign that your child has a damaged pulp.

Sensitivity occurs when the external protective layers of your kid’s teeth are compromised, exposing the nerves to stimuli. A Pulpotomy can help reduce your kid’s sensitivity. A pediatric dentist will fix the damaged nerves and blood vessels to make it easier for circulation to continue. They may also recommend other treatment procedures to fix the exposed external parts. This will minimize the stress that the pulp is undergoing.

    • Chipped Tooth

Children usually chip their teeth while playing. They could be playing at the park or the school’s playground. The injuries caused by a chipped tooth can expose the nerves to infection, leading to discomfort and pain. Additionally, a chipped tooth may alter your kid’s appearance.

There’s a great connection between a chipped tooth and pulp damage. The broken areas are likely to expose the tooth to bacteria and other irritants. A Pulpotomy can prevent further damage and stop the tooth from being infected. It’s important to visit a pediatric dentist immediately when you realize your child’s tooth has been chipped. They’ll recommend a customized treatment plan that will make your child comfortable and heal quickly.

    • Swelling

There’s no worse thing than seeing your child with a swollen cheek. Swelling doesn’t only disfigure your kid’s appearance, but it may be a sign of an underlying dental issue. Your child’s jaw may swell due to inflammation. The inflammation may be caused by an abscess or infection in the tooth’s pulp. You should get this condition treated to prevent the infection from affecting the surrounding tissues. Otherwise, the inflammation may cause pain and make it difficult for your kid to sleep at night.

A pediatric dentist may recommend a Pulpotomy, especially if the swelling is caused by a pulp infection. This treatment will restore your child’s oral health and protect them from further complications.

    Last Word

As a proactive parent, it’s important to recognize any signs of discomfort. Contact a pediatric dentist if your child has any of these symptoms. They’ll address the issue quickly, and preserve your child’s radiant smile.
