In Greek mythology, Aegeus was the King of Athens who famously consulted an oracle before setting off on a journey. During his travels, he encountered the sorceress Medea, who begged for his help in a moment of desperation. This article will explore the story of Medea and Aegeus, as well as the circumstances of their meeting.

    Aegeus’ Travels

Aegeus was the King of Athens and the father of Theseus, the legendary hero. Before Theseus was born, Aegeus set off on a journey to consult an oracle about his future. He journeyed to the Oracle of Delphi, where he was told to take no wife until he returned home.

During his travels, Aegeus encountered many adventures. He was nearly killed by Procrustes, an infamous brigand, but was saved by Theseus. He also encountered the Minotaur, a monstrous creature, in the Labyrinth of Crete. After his journey, he returned to Athens where he was reunited with his son.

    Medea’s Plea for Aid

When Aegeus returned to Athens, he encountered the sorceress Medea. Medea had been betrayed by her husband Jason, who had left her and their two children. In desperation, she begged Aegeus for help, offering him her magical knowledge in exchange for his protection.

Aegeus was moved by Medea’s plight and agreed to help her. He gave her refuge in Athens and allowed her to keep her magical powers. In return, Medea gave Theseus the gift of invincibility. She also provided Aegeus with a magical potion, which he used to distinguish his son from the other suitors of his daughter, Hippolyta.

Aegeus was returning from his travels to seek advice from the Oracle of Delphi when he encountered Medea in need of help. He was moved by her story and offered her refuge in Athens in exchange for her magical knowledge. Medea provided Aegeus with a magical potion that allowed him to recognize his son and protect his daughter from unwanted suitors. In this way, Medea and Aegeus’ story is one of mutual aid and understanding.
