A Brief History of Alnwick Castle

Alnwick Castle has been in existence since 1096, when it was built by Yves de Vescy. It has been home to the Percy family since 1309, when it was inherited by Henry Percy, the first Earl of Northumberland. Throughout its history, Alnwick Castle has been a royal residence, a fortress, and a family home. It was also used as a setting for the Harry Potter films.

Alnwick Castle’s Role in Harry Potter

Alnwick Castle was used as a filming location in the first two Harry Potter films, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The castle was used as the exterior of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In addition, the grounds of the castle were used for the Quidditch pitch, the Forbidden Forest, and Hagrid’s hut.

The interior of the castle was also used to film some of the scenes in the movies. The Great Hall was used for the banquet scene in the first film, and the staircase was used for the scene where Harry and Ron try to get past the troll in the Philosopher’s Stone. The courtyard was also used for several scenes, including the scene where Harry and Draco Malfoy duel each other.
