Who Was Kabuliwala Why Did He Go To Calcutta

Benjamin WhiteBy Benjamin WhiteJune 30, 2023

Kabuliwala, or ‘the man from Kabul’, is a classic tale of friendship written by Rabindranath Tagore in 1892. The story follows the journey of a man from Afghanistan who travels to Calcutta in search of a better life. It is a heartwarming tale that speaks of the power of friendship and kindness, and how even the most unlikely of people can become close friends.

    Kabuliwala: A Tale of Friendship

Kabuliwala is the story of an Afghan man, Rahmat, who is drawn to the city of Calcutta by the promise of a better life. He brings with him a bundle of dried fruits, spices, and other goods from his homeland, which he sells in the streets of Calcutta. While his business is successful, Rahmat is lonely and longs for companionship.

One day, he meets a five-year-old girl named Mini, who is intrigued by his foreign looks and stories. The two quickly become friends, and Rahmat visits Mini’s house every day to tell her stories of his homeland. He even gives her a doll, which Mini cherishes as a symbol of their friendship.

The friendship between Rahmat and Mini is a beautiful example of how the most unlikely of people can become close friends, and it is a testament to the power of kindness and understanding.

    Kabuliwala’s Journey to Calcutta

Rahmat’s journey to Calcutta began in a small village in Afghanistan. He was born to a poor family but was determined to make a better life for himself and his family. So, he packed his belongings and set off for India.

When he arrived in Calcutta, Rahmat was overwhelmed by the sights and sounds of the city. But he was determined to make a living, so he started selling his wares in the streets. He was able to make a decent living, but he was still lonely and yearned for companionship.

It was then that he met Mini, and their friendship blossomed. Rahmat visited her every day, and the two of them shared stories and laughs. But their friendship was short-lived, as Rahmat was eventually arrested and sent back to Afghanistan.

Despite the sad ending, Kabuliwala’s journey to Calcutta is still a story of hope and friendship. It shows us that even in the most unlikely of places, we can find friendship and understanding.

Kabuliwala is a timeless tale of friendship
