How can you delete your Time Machine backups?

Benjamin WhiteBy Benjamin WhiteMay 14, 2024

Creating a backup for your Mac can always be a great idea. The truth is that you never really know what problems can arise and what issues you will face. So it makes a lot of sense to try and create a backup. But if you use a solution like Time Machine, there can be quite a lot of backups. Those add up and eat up a lot of space on your Mac. There are a few things you can do in order to delete those Time Machine backups.

Delete Time Machine backups from within the app

You can enter the Time Machine app and you will see a list of backups. That might not always include all backups, sometimes it just shows the newer Time Machine backups, but not everyone. Still, if you find the backup you want to delete, you can remove it from here. Your Mac will require the admin password to remove those backups, so keep that in mind.

Find Time Machine backup in your Finder

Sometimes, you will need to manually find those backups. In this case, the best approach is to try and find the Time Machine backup in your Finder. Check for a file named Backups.backupdb and here you will find a folder where you will see all the different backups. They are listed individually, you can try to keep the latest one and remove all the others. That alone is definitely a thing to take into account if you want to go the manual route.

    Use the Terminal

Yes, using the Terminal can also help here. Enter the Terminal, type “tmutil listbackups” and here you will see a list of backups, select the one you want to delete and enter the command “sudo tmutil delete” followed by the path. Press Return to delete, and you will be good to go here.

    Start using a cleanup tool

A Mac cleanup tool also helps here, because it can identify and remove old Time Machine backups. Even if you use Time Machine from time to time, it will still generate some really large backups. So it makes a lot of sense to delete old ones, or at least thin them. That’s where a cleanup tool can be very effective, and it will allow you to ensure everything is working just as expected. Plus, it’s a safe and reliable way to remove backups!

Even if you use Time Machine backups, the reality is that they do add up and you can have a lot of them on your computer. The best approach you can have is to narrow things down and see what works for you. Eventually, it becomes a great idea to regularly use a cleanup tool to scan for any backups and remove them with ease. Rest assured that deleting those Time Machine backups always helps, and it can eliminate any potential challenges or issues that can arise. Make sure that you remove those backups often, because you will rarely need more than one or two backups anyway!
