What Happened To Spiro In The Durrells

Benjamin WhiteBy Benjamin WhiteJune 28, 2023

Spiro (Alexis Georgoulis) was a Greek Cypriot who arrived in Corfu in 1935, looking for work. He quickly became a close confidant of the Durrell family and a beloved member of the Corfiot community. Spiro’s life changed dramatically over the course of four seasons of The Durrells, from a humble, hardworking taxi driver to a successful restaurateur, but what happened to him after the show ended?

    Spiro’s Story

Spiro’s story began when he arrived in Corfu in 1935, looking for work and a new life. He found employment as a taxi driver, and soon became the Durrells’ trusted confidant and friend. He was always there to help the family when they needed it, and his loyalty and friendship were invaluable.

When the Durrells first arrived, Spiro was a poor man, struggling to make ends meet. He had a wife and young daughter back in Cyprus, and he often sent them money to help support them. He was also a kind and generous man, always willing to lend a hand or offer advice.

Over the course of the show, Spiro’s life changed dramatically. He became a successful restaurateur, and his business was thriving. He also found love with a local girl, Katerina (Call the Midwife’s Jessica Raine), and the two eventually married.

Spiro’s life was finally looking up, and he was happy and fulfilled. But his story did not end there.

    Life After the Durrells

After the show ended, Spiro and Katerina left Corfu and moved to Athens. They opened a new restaurant there, and it was a great success. Spiro also opened a cabaret club, and his business ventures were doing well.

Spiro and Katerina had a son, and they were living a happy and prosperous life. However, they were still feeling the effects of World War II, and the economic situation in Greece was difficult.

In 1950, Spiro and Katerina decided to move to America. They settled in New York, where Spiro opened a restaurant and continued to work as a taxi driver. He also became involved in the Greek-American community, and he and Katerina made many new friends.

Spiro and Katerina eventually moved to Florida, where they opened another successful restaurant. They continued to work hard and live a happy life until Spiro passed away in 1982.
