Nathuram Godse was a Hindu nationalist who assassinated Mahatma Gandhi, one of the most influential figures in Indian history. His actions have been a source of controversy for decades, and his motivations are still being debated today. In this article, we will examine the life of Nathuram Godse, the events leading up to the assassination, and the aftermath of the tragedy.

    Life of Nathuram Godse

Nathuram Godse was born in 1910 in Baramati, a small village in the Pune district of Maharashtra. He was the fourth son of Vithal Ramji Godse, a postmaster. Godse was a gifted student who excelled in academics and was a proficient speaker. He was also an avid reader and was especially drawn to books on Hinduism.

Godse was a passionate believer in Hindu nationalism, and was a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist organization. He was also a member of the Hindu Mahasabha, a political party that sought to protect the rights of Hindus in India. Godse was a fierce critic of Mahatma Gandhi and his policies, and was vocal in his opposition to the idea of Indian independence.

    Assassination of Mahatma Gandhi

Godse’s opposition to Gandhi’s policies culminated in his decision to assassinate the leader. He began to plan an attack on Gandhi in the late 1940s, and on January 30th, 1948, he shot Gandhi three times with a Beretta 9mm pistol. The shots were fatal and Gandhi died almost instantly.

Godse was immediately arrested and put on trial. He was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death by hanging. He accepted his fate and made no attempt to appeal his sentence.

Godse’s actions sparked outrage throughout India and the world. Many people viewed him as a traitor, and he was widely condemned for his actions.
